  • About the Project

Located by the Rasht-Lahijan road, adjacent to a gas station, this rug shop offers a unique experience. The project started with the following considerations:

Given the primary viewpoint from the road, the high speed of passing vehicles, and the close-up side view from the gas station, the overall form was designed as several large-scale volumes placed side by side, with facades featuring small-scale elements.

The project's facade and interior details reflect its overall structure, designed to represent the warp, weft, and knots of a rug, as if the knots are being woven and becoming denser towards the bottom, forming the structure of a large rug.

Since the project is perceived as a volume rather than a surface, an inclined plane in the northwest corner was introduced to free the skyline, and another inclined plane in the entrance hallway prevents the path from feeling narrow and monotonous.

Each knot tied by the weaver is like a beam of light emanating from the loom. Thus, the facade and interior lighting design follow this principle, with a light placed inside each symbolic knot.

The details of the project's interior spaces and facade were also inspired by the stages of rug weaving, representing the warp, weft, and knots. It creates an abstract structure of a large rug, with knots appearing to be woven and becoming denser towards the bottom.

    Development Process

The design process began with an exploration of the form and structure of rugs. Initially, an abstract form was extracted, and four volumes were arranged based on this form. Three of these volumes function as the "rug gallery spaces." The southeast volume, considering circulation and lighting, houses other functions. A 12-meter-wide space required by the client is situated at the core of these four volumes, with entrance access and vertical connections in the central area between these volumes.

A hallway between the two northern volumes brings the entrance door closer to the center of the structure rather than the facade, so visitors entering the central 12-meter hall encounter it directly, and the value of the four adjoining gallery spaces is nearly equal.

Since the building is perceived as a volume and not a surface, the roof's northwest corner is designed as an inclined plane, freeing the skyline and enhancing the volume's perception for pedestrians and drivers. Another inclined plane in the entrance hallway ensures that walking through this corridor does not feel narrow and monotonous.
