  • About this Facade Design Project:

Contrary to the popular belief that facade design is primarily about material selection, we argue that controlling sightlines, light, and spatial relationships holds greater significance.

This project, directly opposite an electrical substation, underscored this principle.

To mitigate the visual impact of the substation, we exploited the building's trapezoidal shape and rotated windows to redirect views.

The facade was maximized with glazing, subject to municipal regulations, and complemented with planters for visual control.

The existing roof overhang was replicated on all floors, providing shade and rain protection, especially for the north-facing facade.

Security concerns on the ground floor necessitated a full-height fence which was integrated into the overall facade design, with vertical elements carried through to the upper floors.

    Step 1: Visual Axis Control

To reorient the visual axis, we carefully designed the facade elements to shield the view from this undesirable element (electrical substation) .

    Step 2: Creating Visual Variety

A dynamic facade was achieved through varying the quantity and arrangement of facade elements across different levels.
Ground floor elements were more densely clustered and often combined with fencing for security purposes. Upper floors featured a more open and airy composition.

Step 3: Revitalizing the facade with nature

A dynamic facade was achieved through varying the quantity and arrangement of facade elements across different levels.
Due to the lack of a natural view opposite the building, we chose to enrich the facade by creating an artificial green landscape. The use of plants and flower-boxes not only offers residents a pleasing visual experience but also gives the building a unique identity.
