work + culture + living go back to all projects

  • About the project

This project was an architecture competition where we had to combine residential units and commercial spaces (shops) on a very small plot of land and present a creative idea. At the outset, it was necessary to take a deeper look at concepts such as life, work, etc.

    Life in the City

In recent decades, due to human daily needs, buildings have undergone changes. Due to the increased need for work and meeting basic necessities, most residential buildings are combined with commercial usage, and the subject of residence and social context has been sidelined.

Naturally, at the beginning, fulfilling the basic desires of society is a priority. Given this issue, alongside it, we can also incorporate elements such as culture.

In Iran, a country where the average reading time per capita is less than a few minutes and no effort has been made to improve it, addressing this issue alongside other human issues is important.

Considering the above statements, the question arises: Is it possible to place a cultural space like a library within the flow of work and life?

    Our Approach

In this project, the aim is to view the commercial space not merely from the perspective of fulfilling the material needs of the society but as an integral part of the living complex.

In this context, the emphasis of this project is that by using vertical connection spaces (stairs), they can play a fundamental role in this functionality.
Moreover, as a bridge, it can integrate the cultural section with the commercial and residential areas.

In this way, by using bookshelves as small libraries, we have introduced the stairs as a cultural usage (library).

Therefore, we have named the commercial section "Book Cafe" and included a café in the basement and ground floor for residential and commercial services and welfare.

    Stairs as an object

The stairs are used to connect the residential section with the commercial section.

In such a way that the residential user can, when needed, enter the cultural and commercial section through a separate entrance specific to them, using the stairs to access the upper and lower parts.

In fact, the cultural section of the story is embedded within the stairs and, like the stairs, connects the residential space with the commercial one.

Thus, we were able to give another usage to the staircase space, which is necessarily present in all buildings.

    Residential Life

Nowadays, with the increase in population, additional costs, and inflation, as well as the lack of suitable spaces, we are witnessing changes in family patterns and a new lifestyle that forces citizens to live in inadequate spaces due to unmet needs.

Given these conditions, spaces such as micro-scale spaces that can meet some of a person's needs are of great importance.

Therefore, we have chosen micro-scale residential units to incorporate several separate spaces to meet basic primary needs.

To achieve this, we have made the space dynamic and movable. Each section of the space has the ability to be folded and moved.
